Regulating political speech in the workplace is a difficult area. In the current divisive political environment, political speech in the workplace raises concerns regarding free speech and discrimination.

This session will focus on the legal issues surrounding regulating political speech in the workplace, including potential claims under Connecticut's free speech law and how the difficult issue of political speech in the workplace can intersect--and potentially conflict--with non-discrimination laws and an employer's culture and policies.

Questions to be explored include: How can employers their maintain their diversity efforts in today’s climate? Should employees be required to remove “Black Lives Matter” COVID-19 masks and other clothing? What about “Blue Lives Matter” or “All Lives Matter” clothing or symbols? What are the legal risks of terminating an employee who is engaged in political speech?
